How can you help a turtle in the road?

Spring & summer means lots of animals on the move. Sometimes in the road.

And unfortunately even the quick ones don’t always make it across safely. 😢 And for slow-moving turtles a busy road can be a death trap.

But you can help!

In most cases it just takes a few minutes to get a turtle safely out of the road and on its way to wherever it was going.

(Key words here are “where it was going.” Please don’t bring it someplace you think would be “better.” The turtle may not agree.).

It’s spring and turtles are out of hibernation.

They’re looking for food, mates, and good places to lay eggs. And often those places will be on the other side of a road.

If they’re lucky, the road isn’t busy and they make it safely across.

If the road is busy (or a driver isn’t paying attention) …

Well, that turtle could get crushed. 🙁

No that’s not the beginning of a joke.

In fact, turtles crossing the road is serious business. They have things to do, places to be.

It’s also dangerous business. These guys are pretty oblivious to the huge hunks of metal bearing down on them. Sadly, sometimes drivers are oblivious to the turtles, too.

You can find turtles crossing the road at any time of year (unless they’re hibernating, of course!).

But they’re especially active in spring. They’ve just come out of hibernation and they’re busy getting on with life.
