Do your scaly babies love munching on insects? But maybe you’re less fond of creepy crawlies in your house … especially the kind that can escape. Like crickets!
Well JurassiDiet EasiCrickets (from JurassiPet) might be your answer. These are canned crickets that are processed to keep all the good nutrients and moisture while getting rid of the hassles.
You know, like gut-loading to make sure they’re packed with nutrition. Hunting down escaped insects. And the chirping noise the live guys make way too often.

Easi-Crickets Sizes and Ingredients
The ingredients are really simple: crickets! According to the can, they’re farm raised crickets (Gryllus Linnaeus).
You can choose the size cricket you want: large or small. Both sizes come in a 1.2 oz can.
The can also lists the following Guaranteed Analysis:
- Crude Protein, min – 20.0%
- Crude Fat, min – 5.0 %
- Crude Fiber, max – 1.0%
- Crude Ash, max – 3.0%
- Moisture content, max – 75%
The crickets are soft and moist, making them easy for your box turtle to eat and digest.
The crickets do have a smell, which some people found too strong. Others said it was noticeable but not overpowering.
But keep in mind that the idea is to appeal to your pet, not necessarily to you. Some reptiles really like foods with a strong odor.
Also, both the large and small crickets may be bigger than you’d expect.
Using These Canned Crickets
Like most canned foods, you just pop them open and give a few to your boxie (or other reptile, of course!).
JurassiPet says these crickets can be used as a main food source or a treat. Keep in mind this is generic advice for all reptile owners. Some reptiles eat only insects. But your boxie needs vegetables, too.
So either feed a couple with a salad or alternate feedings between these guys and a veggie meal.
It’s also a good idea to dust them with calcium powder to make them even better for your pet.
Now, unless you have a whole bunch of boxies (or other reptiles), you’re not going to use a whole can in one feeding. You’ll need to store them refrigerated between meals. This is important, because if you don’t refrigerate them, they’ll most likely mold before your pet can finish them.
Of course, as moist as they are, they may mold quickly even in the refrigerator. If they do mold before you can use them up, you may want to try freezing meal-sized portions to thaw as needed.
Will Your Box Turtle Eat EasiCrickets?
Well, I don’t really know, because I don’t know your box turtle.
Although box turtles in nature are scavengers who know they should eat what they can find, captive boxies can get quite picky.
Some love canned insects. Some don’t. They may even have a preference for a specific brand of canned cricket. It might be these. It might not.
And some boxies and other reptiles prefer their insects be moving. In that case, you can try holding one with tweezers (like these Zoo Med feeding tongs) and dangling it in front of your pet’s head (close, but not too close). That may make it look like it’s alive and prompt your pet to attack it.
The best idea is probably to try a can and see how your boxie likes them. If they’re a winner, buy more. If not, then you haven’t lost much.
