Recent Box Turtle News

A heartwarming little story about turning a yard into a wildlife haven. And encountering the same box turtle over the years. Love it!

This yard is a box turtle haven!: At least one guy counts it as part of his regular habitat.     The author includes pictures of the very colorful male turtle.

And a few more boxie stories we feel like sharing again. Check them out if you haven’t already.

  • Studying the Gulf Coast Box Turtle: For some reason this subspecies of box turtle hasn’t been studied much. One student at Antioch University New England wants to change that.
  • Fiberglass box turtle: A vet in Ohio fixed a boxie’s broken shell with fiberglass a few years ago and released him. Recently she discovered her old patient just hanging out in the woods. How did she know it was him? The fiberglass “bandage” was still attached!
  • Bourret’s box turtle babies update: We shared a story about the endangered turtle hatchlings back in June. The National Zoo says they’re doing great … and they may have some younger siblings by the end of July!
  • Good news for the Keeled Box Turtle: This species of Asian Box Turtle is endangered, like so many of its cousins. But the Turtle Conservation Center has had recent success with breeding them. It says 2016 was its best year yet.

Baby sea turtles, a lost tortoise, and a plea to pick up after yourself, among other stories today.

It’s a volcano of baby sea turtles!: Ok, not really. But it is amazing to see dozens of little turtles explode from their nest and stream toward the sea. They even had a leader. 😀     (Video)

Please stop dumping pet turtles!: Here’s just one good reason. Dumping fresh water turtles in a salt-water pond will kill them. 🙁

And recycle your fishing line: Poor Dugan might still be alive if he hadn’t found some line to eat. 🙁

20 years protecting vulnerable turtles: She’s part of the Island Turtle team in Isle of Palms and Sulllivan’s Island.

It’s an African spurred tortoise again: But unlike Millenium, we don’t know this one’s name quite yet. He was found wandering the streets of Massapequa (NY), but he’s currently safe with a local vet.

 

 

Recent International Turtle News

Protecting the turtles is a lot of work. Luckily there are a lot of people passionate about doing just that. But they still need more help!

Teaching’s loss is the turtles’ gain: She left teaching to start a family. And discovered a passion for marine conservation. Now she works to protect the Seychelles’ sea turtles.   

Plastic, plastic, and more plastic.: The Mediterranean Sea is filling up with the stuff. This is bad for both people and turtles. And other marine life.

Nesting green sea turtle helped back to the sea: She apparently got confused after laying her eggs and ended up on some rocks. Lucky for her, a caring person reported the problem.

Can the Yangtze giant softshell turtle be saved?: There’s only 3 left (that we know of). And breeding hasn’t succeeded yet. But at least one Chinese scientist isn’t giving up.

Pet shop turtle crowding?: Is this pet shop hurting the health of its turtles?

Protecting Cyprus’ turtles: Experts say current protections are not good enough. Expanding areas where they’re protected may be a start.
